Located in the Shenandoah Valley in the town of Lexington, Virginia, VMI is a 2-1/2 hour drive from Richmond, 3-1/2 hours from Washington, D.C., and 4 hours from Charlotte, North Carolina. The campus, referred to as "the Post," sits on 134 acres, 12 of which are designated as a National Historic District.

Driving Directions

Tours of the VMI post, guided by cadets, are available at the Marshall Museum, daily at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. during the academic year.

Applicants should be between 16 to 22 years of age and must be unmarried, physically fit for enrollment in ROTC, and graduates of accredited secondary schools. Completion of the following units is recommended: English(4), social studies(3), laboratory sciences(3), foreign language(3), mathematics(3) including 2 years of algebra and 1 of geometry, and electives(2). SAT I or ACT and satisfactory character recommendations are required.

Applications are accepted between September 1 and February 15 of the senior year in high school. Early decision applications are due by November 15 (notification by December 15). Applications will be accepted on a space-available basis after February15. Applicants deferred from early decision and regular decision applicants will be notified on a rolling basis. 1,300 cadets from 37 states and 9 foreign countries. Seven percent of the Corps is African-American, four percent Hispanic, five percent Asian or Pacific Islander, one percent American Indian or Alaskan Native. Five percent is female. 134 acres, 12 of which are designated as a National Historic District. The campus is referred to as "the Post." Check out the post webcams. Cadets must complete classes in one of the Institute's four (Air Force, Army, Marines, or Navy) ROTC programs. ROTC scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. 40% of each class pursues commissions.

Faculty

145 faculty members; a cadet-faculty ratio of 12:1. 96 percent of full-time faculty members hold the Ph.D or terminal degree.
About 18 percent of VMI graduates make the military a career. Other graduates have distinguished themselves in all walks of life, including finance, medicine, law, and education.
VMI is a member of NCAA Division I (Division I-AA in football) and the Big South Conference; 15 intercollegiate sports, including baseball, basketball, men's and women's track and field, and wrestling. Women may also compete individually in swimming. A range of club and intramural options are also available.
