3. What kind of job opportunities are available at graduation? Am I required to accept a commission at graduation?
The opportunities for employment following graduation are many. They generally fall under the following categories: Commission Track Reserve Officer Training Corps: Although all cadets are required to participate in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at VMI, they are not required to accept a commission. Approximately 40% of a graduating class will seek an active duty commission in either the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps. These commissions are generally for a period of from three to four years duration. There may be an additional period of time that must be spent in a reserve status (recallable to active duty). Opportunities for flight training, nuclear power school, special ops, Ranger, and Airborne school are available to qualified cadets. Army ROTC Navy ROTC Air Force ROTC Non-Commission Track Graduate/Professional School: Approximately 8% of each graduating class will enroll in graduate or professional school following graduation. These include masters programs in engineering, science, business, and liberal arts.
